The two most fundamental human experiences—fear and love—accompany us every day. Often, they are not opposites, but rather two points along the path of seeking the truth. In the Old Testament, a person’s encounter with God often begins with fear—of the majesty, mystery, and incomprehensibility of the holy. In the New Testament, it is love that becomes the highest dimension of a person’s relationship with God and with other people. How often, when faced with something different, unknown, or incomprehensible, do we feel fear? In moments of threat, judgment, or uncertainty—what do we choose? Are we capable of overcoming fear and acting out of love?
