Zenyk Art Gallery opens the exhibition project “OUR” – one of the largest exhibitions of Ukrainian national art, primitivism and brute art in recent years, which brought together 207 works by 27 Ukrainian artists and craftsmen – from Hutsul Kryvorivna to Slobozhanshchyna.
What is the exhibition about?
“OUR” – an exhibition about talent and tradition, and how talent can save it. About tradition like sand that slips through our fingers if we don’t catch it with a brush in time.
The main message of the exhibition is to show how folk tradition turns into an individual artistic universe, which was preserved and continued by professional craftsmen, folk craftsmen and artists “outside the system”. At a time when traditions are easily lost in the fast rhythm of modernity, art becomes a way not only to preserve them, but also to rethink them.
What does the exhibition consist of?
The exhibition consists of three sections and introduces three artistic phenomena – primitivism, naive art and art brut, revealing their nature, differences and connection with folk tradition.
Among the authors are Maria Prymachenko, Paraska Plytka-Gorytsvit, Hanna Sobachko-Shostak, Yevmen Pshechenko, Nikifor Epifanii Drovnyak, Iryna Maksymova, Dmytro Moldovanov, Yana Gudzan, Tetyana Myalkovska, Dmytro Striek and other Ukrainian artists.
And what are elephants and flies here?
Elephants and flies became a separate plot line of the project. Exploring the creativity of artists through the prism of style, a common motif for different authors was found – an elephant and a fly, quoted in the proverb “Don’t make an elephant out of a fly.” The history of this image dates back to the Baroque era: the first image of an elephant appeared in the painting of the Trinity Gate Church of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Subsequently, this image – literal and stylized – “wandered” in the art of primitivist artists, naive and art brut.
The exhibition includes works from the collections of the National Museum of Decorative Arts of Ukraine, the National Museum in Lviv named after Andrey Sheptytsky, the Museum of Folk Culture and Life in Lviv named after Klymentiy Sheptytsky, the Museum of Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit, KUMF Gallery, Olga Stavnykovych Studio, as well as drawings provided by the Lviv Regional Clinical Psychiatric Architecture. hospital.
