The exhibition of two artists from Uzhhorod – Beata Korn and Viktor Melnychuk “Cards, Stone and Fire” will contain three images. Stone – as a material memory. Playing cards – as a chance, fate and an attempt to read them. And fire – as a transition, a point of no return.
These images come from experiences: collecting stones by the river and playing cards associated with childhood memories.
Beata Korn combines natural stones with ceramic forms. The stones in her works do not look like a burden – they are rather accepted by the form, held by it in a state of fragile but preserved balance. This is not a “stone on the soul”, but a stone that has found a place.
Viktor Melnychuk presents the series “War Cards” – porcelain playing cards, as if drawn with a blue ballpoint pen. This is a deck that cannot be played with and cannot be guessed at. Because the usual system of signs is destroyed in it: suits, figures and meanings no longer coincide. The card becomes not a tool of the game, but evidence of a time in which the rules of the game have lost their force.
Fire in this exhibition is not only a technological stage of firing ceramics. It becomes an image of a test in which soft matter acquires hardness, and personal experience – imagery and form.
