The exhibition by Lviv artist Yevhen Ravskyi is an attempt to forge a visual language of military decorations, with a profound focus on experience, memory, and human dignity. Here, an award emerges not merely as a symbol of triumph, but as a testament to the journey endured, to service, and to brotherhood.
Following the onset of the full-scale invasion, Yevhen Ravskyi served in the ranks of the 103rd Separate Territorial Defence Brigade, named after Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Amidst his service at the front, he continued to develop his exploration of military awards—a subject he had been researching prior to 2022. It was there that he created the design for the “Order of the Iron Lion” decoration, which is presented today in Lviv to military personnel, medics, and volunteers.
The Latin motto “Honor et Patria” appeals to the classical ideal of military valour, framed as a responsibility towards the community, history, and those standing shoulder to shoulder. Ravskyi himself ironically refers to decorations as “men’s jewellery”, deliberately stripping away any institutional grandiosity to accentuate what truly matters—the lived human experience behind them.
