Images of the Crucifixion appear more and more frequently, as do snakes—embodying not only sin overcome by holiness, but also pain and great suffering that are so difficult to combat. Eventually, light returns from the darkness, and Christmas and the Annunciation return as well, bringing with them the Light of God, which no darkness can swallow up.
