On September 11 at 4:00 PM, the Andriy Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv will host the opening of the exhibition project “Transition”.

The exhibition features almost 30 large-scale works created during 2019–2026. This is a painting about a changing world, about the fragility of familiar forms, and about the moment when the old is already disappearing and the new is just emerging.

“Transition” by Smetana is a space in which ruin becomes memory, memory becomes responsibility, and responsibility becomes the possibility of a new life. The artist’s artistic practice unfolds on the edge of reality – from botanical-industrial motifs to reduced compositions, heavy horizontals, and almost ghostly landscapes. The images here seem to elude final interpretation, leaving room for one’s own associations and questions.

Petro Smetana is a Ukrainian artist whose works and projects are presented in Ukraine and abroad. His exhibitions have been held in Warsaw, Krakow, New York, Venice, Istanbul. Among them are the personal exhibition Aftereffect: Landscapes and Still Lifes at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York and the Resurrection project, presented in the context of the 59th Venice Biennale in partnership with the Green Sofa Gallery and the Iwona Loban Art Studio. His works are kept in museum and private collections in Ukraine, Poland, the USA, Canada, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, China, and the Netherlands.
